Saint Valentine: Patron Saint of Lovers

On the occasion of Valentine’s Day last February 14, I feel it is just fitting that I write about one of the most loved patron saints, and he is Saint Valentine. You might think that he is just the Patron Saint for lover and couples. But no, Saint Valentine is also the Roman Catholic Saint of bee keepers, travelers and those with epilepsy.

Saint Valentine was said to be a Roman who was martyred because of his Christian beliefs and faith. Other Catholic historians believed that St. Valentine was a priest who was persecuted during the time of Claudius.

It was said that Saint Valentine was able to restore the sight of the daughter of his jailer, while waiting for his death execution. He even left a message for the daughter saying “Your Valentine.”

It was Pope Gelasius who marked the date February 14 as the day of celebration and honor for St. Valentine.

Here is a short prayer to Roman Catholic Saint Valentine

Dear Patron Saint and blessed martyr, Helps us to love with all our hearts. Teach us to find joy and happiness in giving. We pray to you that all true lovers will be able to bring out the very best in themselves. All this in the name of the Lord God.
